Inside the Sports Illustrated 2022 Sportsperson of the Year Awards

The annual Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year Awards, presented by Chase, took place on Thursday, December 8, at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco to celebrate this year’s most defining moments and figures in sports.

The event, which was hosted by Rob Riggle, brought together top athletes and A-listers as well as honored four-time NBA champion and two-time MVP Stephen Curry as the 2022 Sportsperson of the Year. Here, a recap of the evening’s biggest happenings.


The 2022 Sportsperson of the Year

Recognized both on and off the court, Curry accepted the honor following a stellar 2022 that included his first Finals MVP award with the Golden State Warriors and continued philanthropic work through his Eat.Learn.Play. Foundation. He has also worked to promote inclusion in the sport of golf by supporting the Howard University golf team and launched the UNDERRATED Golf Tour for underrepresented junior players.

Top Award Honorees

Congratulations to the distinguished recipients of the night:

  • Muhammad Ali Legacy Award: Allyson Felix, the most decorated U.S. track athlete in history

  • Reebok Human Rights Award: Dieter Cantu, a youth activist recognized for his work with juvenile justice reform, police accountability and bail reform

  • SportsKid of the Year Award: Carter Bonas, an 11-year-old elite golfer who is charting a path of activism and entrepreneurism

  • Male and Female Athletes of the Year: New York Yankees baseball star Aaron Judge and professional softball player Jocelyn Alo

  • Inspiration of the Year: Brian Robinson, a running back for the Washington Commanders who made a miraculous recovery after suffering harrowing injuries

  • The GOATs: Albert Pujols, Rob Gronkowski, Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Mike Krzyzewski, Sylvia Fowles, Sue Bird and Jimmie Johnson
